FIFA's Titanic: Discounted Tickets - Lifeline or Brand Betrayal?

MONDAY 08 JUNE 2026 - TORONTO - Following our article last week on allegations of illegal ticket pricing, FIFA reportedly started selling tickets at up to 30% below face value through a resale marketplace run by Ticketmaster. Critics allege however that these are actually direct sales by FIFA to circumvent any obligation to refund earlier buyers at higher prices.
This raises questions that matter as much to finance professionals as they do to football fans:
Is it fair that early buyers paid a premium, and do they have a right to a refund now that prices have fallen?
The case for FIFA is straightforward: like airline tickets or concert seats, prices reflect certainty and timing. Buy early, pay more; wait, and you take a risk. Fans who protested with their wallets are effectively exercising their right to do exactly that. Similarly, on a continental level, English football fans protested against the European Super League in 2021 and, through the fan-led review spearheaded by Dame Tracey Crouch, pushed through protections for the heritage of English football in the Football Governance Act 2025.
But the allegation that these are not genuine resales changes the picture entirely. If FIFA is testing a new, lower price point while disguising it as a secondary market transaction, that is a different matter — legally and ethically.
So should FIFA refund those who paid more?
The answer likely lies in the contractual terms of FIFA with its ticketing agents. Gibson Alexander has a track record in resolving sensitive legal and ethical matters under Swiss law, from our design and delivery of a restructuring for another major global governing body of sport, for example. With the tournament days away, has FIFA left it too late to correct the course?
